Glaucoma

Appleseed Eyecare strives to provide the most advanced diagnostic treatment and management for those who suffer from glaucoma.

What is glaucoma?

Often called “the silent thief of sight,” glaucoma is an increase in the intraocular pressure of the eyes, which causes damage to the optic nerve with no signs or symptoms in the early stages of the disease. If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to a decrease in peripheral vision and eventually blindness.

Is there an available treatment for glaucoma?

Glaucoma can be treated with eye drops, laser surgery, traditional surgery or a combination of these methods. Glaucoma can be managed if detected early, and that with medical and/or surgical treatment, most people with glaucoma will not lose their sight.

Are there any supplements for glaucoma?

There are no natural supplements proven to aid in reducing the development of glaucoma. However, a healthy diet and routine exercise are vital in maintaining overall body health and function.

Can I reverse the damage?

Damage to the optic nerve is irreversible because the cable of nerve fibers doesn’t have the capacity to regenerate or heal itself when damage occurs. Research is still in the initial stages of investigating the mechanisms of regeneration and how they can be stimulated. Since glaucoma is incurable, early detection and regular eye exams are vital to slowing the progress of the disease.
