Valeda for Macular Degeneration Treatment

Valeda for Macular Degeneration Treatment

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive eye condition that affects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. As the condition advances, everyday activities such as reading, driving, and recognizing faces may become more difficult. Valeda offers a noninvasive treatment option for certain patients with dry age-related macular degeneration. Using specialized light therapy, Valeda is designed to improve visual acuity and support retinal health.

What Is Valeda Light Therapy?

Valeda is an FDA-authorized treatment that uses photobiomodulation (PBM) to deliver specific wavelengths of yellow, red, and near-infrared light to the retina.

This technology targets cellular processes involved in energy production, particularly within the mitochondria, which help maintain normal retinal function. By supporting cellular activity, Valeda may help improve visual acuity in eligible patients with dry AMD. Unlike surgical procedures, Valeda does not require injections, incisions, or anesthesia.

How Can Valeda Help with Dry Macular Degeneration?

Valeda light therapy may help improve visual clarity and support visual function in eligible patients with dry age-related macular degeneration. Clinical studies, including the LIGHTSITE III trial, have shown promising results, with treated patients experiencing an average visual improvement of approximately one line on an eye chart compared to the control group after two years. The treatment does not cure macular degeneration, reverse all existing vision loss, or guarantee that the condition will stop progressing.

Who Is a Candidate for Valeda Treatment?

Valeda is intended for patients who meet specific clinical criteria. Potential candidates generally include individuals with:

  • Dry age-related macular degeneration with qualifying drusen deposits or non-central geographic atrophy.

  • Best-corrected visual acuity between 20/32 and 20/70 in the eye being considered for treatment.

  • No evidence of wet macular degeneration or center-involving geographic atrophy in the treatment eye.

  • No known sensitivity to the treatment wavelengths or history of light-triggered neurological conditions, such as certain migraines or epilepsy.

Certain photosensitizing medications may also affect eligibility. A comprehensive eye examination and retinal imaging help determine whether Valeda is appropriate.

What to Expect During Valeda Treatment

Valeda treatment is performed in an office setting and typically takes less than five minutes per eye during each session. Patients sit comfortably in front of the device while controlled wavelengths of light are delivered to the eyes.

A typical treatment course consists of nine sessions over three to five weeks. Treatment courses are generally repeated approximately every four months, depending on the prescribed plan.

Most patients can resume their normal activities afterward. Temporary afterimages from the bright lights may occur but generally resolve quickly.

Managing Macular Degeneration with Ongoing Eye Care

Although Valeda provides an additional treatment option, regular eye examinations remain essential for monitoring macular degeneration. Retinal imaging, including optical coherence tomography (OCT), helps evaluate changes in the macula and monitor disease progression. Depending on the stage of AMD, additional recommendations may include AREDS2 supplements, lifestyle modifications, and specialized retinal care.
